Bio-Clip Cuff is a non-invasive, stand-alone device that simply attaches to your arm using a regular blood pressure cuff – no computers, no wires, no fuss. All you have to do is pop the Bio Clip Cuff on to your arm and press the automated start key. In under a minute, you’ll have valuable information on the state of your arteries.
You will then have this information to hand to discuss with your healthcare or naturopathic practitioner, if you need to make any changes necessary to improve or maintain the health of your arteries. And because it’s so easy to use, you can use the Bio Clip Cuff to monitor the health of your arteries over time, enabling you to keep an eye on what’s happening, monitor and discuss this, and make any changes that are necessary, or to see if the changes that you have made are having the desired effect – all of which will enable you to reach the goal of keeping your arteries as healthy as possible for as long as possible.
What does the Bio Clip Cuff measure?
The Bio Clip Cuff measures your arterial pulse wave velocity which is known to be directly associated with arterial stiffness. Every time your heart beats and the aortic valve opens, your aorta receives a rushing pulse of blood from the heart. In addition, it also receives pressure that spreads from the walls of the heart to the walls of the aorta. This wave of pressure (or pulse wave) travels down the arterial walls from the heart ahead of blood flow. However, when the pulse wave hits a major branching point, such as at the renal and femoral arteries, it is reflected back so that it reverses direction and travels back to its point of origin. This reversing wave is known as the ‘wave reflection’.
As our heart beats therefore these pulse waves and their reflections form a pattern that is both an observable and measurable physiological phenomenon. As mentioned earlier what’s of crucial importance is the speed (velocity) of the wave cycle as this reflects the stiffness of your arteries. The stiffer your arteries, the quicker the pulse wave reflection bounces back – the softer your arteries, the longer it takes for the wave reflection to return back to its point of origin.
It’s a bit like a ball hitting a wall – if the wall is hard, say made of brick, then the ball will bounce back quickly. But if the wall was made of something soft such as foam, then the ball will bounce back much more slowly.
How easy is it to use the Bio Clip Cuff and interpret the results it provides?
The Bio Clip Cuff has been specifically designed for home use and you certainly don’t need a medical degree to use it or understand the results it gives you. The Bio Clip Cuff is a completely standalone unit that doesn’t require a computer connection to work.
As mentioned above it works using a regular blood pressure cuff. All you have to do is put it on and press the start button – the rest is of the procedure is automated. It only takes around a minute for the test to be performed and your results are then directly displayed on the Bio Clip Cuff screen.
The results themselves are also very easy to interpret. An LED display bar-graph suggests if your arteries are normal (green zone), stiffening (yellow zone) or stiff (red zone). In addition the screen also displays you current resting heart pulse rate and both your systolic blood and diastolic blood pressures.
What’s more the Bio-Clip Cuff can store the results of up to 30 tests. And using this stored information, the Bio-Clip Cuff can also provide you with averages for your blood pressure, heart rate and arterial stiffness results – vital parameters when it comes to assessing your cardiovascular health.
Armed with all this information, you can at last really take control of your cardiovascular health and fitness. After all, in the words of the 17th Century physician Thomas Sydenham, ‘a man is only as old as his arteries’.
